Two Brothers Tile Installation

Fireplace tile, set plumb.

A fireplace is looked at from a fixed seat, so a layout error that would pass in a bathroom is obvious here.

Gas, venting and clearances

Gas line work and any modification to the firebox or venting are licensed trades. Clearance to combustibles follows the appliance manufacturer's specification.

What decides the price of a fireplace surround

A surround is a small area with a lot of detail, so the cost tracks the detail more than the square footage.

  • How much comes off first. Old brick, stone or a tiled face has to be removed or furred over before anything new goes on.
  • The clearances the appliance requires. A manufactured firebox has a listed clearance to combustibles and the surround is built to it.
  • Whether the hearth is included. A hearth is a different substrate problem from a vertical face.
  • Tile format. A full height feature wall in large format needs a flat plane across the whole thing.
  • Mantel work. Removing, re-hanging or trimming around a mantel is joinery on top of the tile.

What can sit next to a firebox

Not every material belongs near heat. The appliance's own listing is the authority, and it is worth reading before choosing tile.

01

Porcelain and ceramic

Stable under heat cycling and the usual choice for a surround face.

02

Natural stone

Handsome and heavy. Weight drives the substrate, and some stones will discolour with repeated heat.

03

Anything combustible in the clearance zone

Trim, timber and some panel products cannot enter the clearance the manufacturer lists. That distance is set by the appliance, not by taste.

Fireplace tile questions

How much does it cost to tile a fireplace?

It follows the tear-out, the tile and whether a hearth and mantel are in scope, more than the size of the face. We look at the firebox and the wall before quoting.

Can you tile straight over the brick?

Sometimes. A sound, flat, clean brick face can be prepared and tiled. An uneven or spalling one gets furred and boarded first, because tile copies whatever it is set on.

Can you tile over an existing brick fireplace?

Often yes, if the brick is sound, flat enough and the clearances still work once the new material adds thickness. It gets assessed before it is quoted.

Does tile near a firebox need special material?

The clearance and the substrate matter more than the tile. The appliance specification sets the minimum distances and they are not negotiable.
