What needs a licensed plumber
Replacing the tub itself, or moving any plumbing behind it, is licensed plumbing work and is coordinated with a licensed plumber.
What decides the price of a tub surround
Most of the cost is decided before any tile is opened. These are the parts that move it.
- What the old surround was hiding. Fiberglass units are often wet behind the flange, and that wall gets repaired first.
- Where the tile stops. Running to the ceiling is more tile, more cuts and a better looking finish than stopping at the old line.
- Whether the tub stays. A new tub means licensed plumbing work coordinated around the tile.
- Tile size and pattern. A stacked or offset layout changes the cutting, not just the look.
- Wall condition. Out of plumb studs get corrected before board goes on, or every course after it fights the error.
Retile, or drop in a new insert
Both are legitimate. They solve different problems and it is worth knowing which one you are buying.
Tile over a waterproofed wall
Slower and more expensive, fits any opening, and can run full height. The waterproofing behind it is what it lives or dies on.

How much does it cost to retile a tub surround?
It moves with the size of the wall, the tile, and what is found behind the old surround once it is out. We quote after seeing it rather than publishing a number that would not survive the tear-out.
Is it cheaper to replace the tub or just retile around it?
Leaving a sound tub in place and retiling the walls is usually the smaller job, because it keeps the plumbing untouched. If the tub itself is cracked or stained through the finish, replacing it while the wall is already open is the sensible order.
Can you tile over my old surround?
Be wary of anyone who says yes. What is behind a failing surround is usually wet, and tiling over it traps the problem.
Should the tile go to the ceiling?
Running it full height is the change that most often makes a small bathroom read as finished, and it removes the dust ledge a half-height surround leaves behind.
